Tabernacle.

C. JESUS OBSERVED THE TEMPLE (2:14)

D. JESUS CLEANSED THE TEMPLE (2:15-16)

E. ONE THING TO BELIEVE AND ANOTHER THING TO FOLLOW JESUS (Chapter 2:23-25)

II. THERE WAS A MAN OF THE PHARISEES NAMED NICODEMUS

A. A RULER OF THE JEWS

1. A member of the Sanhedrin

2. Sanhedrin – Jewish Supreme Court. Greek word means “Assembly,” or “Council.”

3. 71 men were chose to serve on the Sanhedrin, Nicodemus was one of those. A ruler

of the Jews, a powerful person.

B. ALSO A PHARISEE

1. One of the 6,000 men that were separated. Pharisee means “Separated Ones.”

2. Devoted to keeping the minute details of the Law. Not just what the Laws declares

determined to keep everything perfectly. They were separated from others.

E. A TEACHER OF THE LAW (3:10)

1. Master means – Premier Teacher, not a rookie, a master.

III. NICODEMUS CAME TO JESUS BY NIGHT

A. A Pharisee, a Separated one, a Ruler of the Jews, A Teacher of the Law, came to Jesus (vs. 2)

by night.

B. Why at night? Possibilities:

1. It could be because of Timidity?

2. It might be he did it respectfully, out of respect?

3. Opportunity for having a lengthy conversation with Jesus, better time?

C. But one thing we do know…

1. He came when it was dark and he left with lots of light.

2. He came when it was night, but he left with the light, because he will be converted.

• Became a secret follower (John 7:50)

• Joseph from Arimathea and Nicodemus buried Jesus (John 19:38-42).

IV. PRIVATE CONVERSATION

A. Nicodemus made his way to see Jesus to have a private conversation.

B. There are some things you’ll never receive from Jesus in a crowd. You must pay Him a

private visit.

V. BORN AGAIN

A. He came to Jesus at night (verse 2) and said, “Rabi,” Nicodemus said, “We know that that no

one could do these things except God be with him.” By the way, what is Jesus name given

by Prophet Isaiah prophetically? “Emmanuel” which means, “God with us.”

B. Vs. 3 “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

C. Vs. 4 – Nicodemus’ response, “How” not “What” or “Why.” “How could I be born again?”

D. Vs 5, “Except a man be born of Water and of Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

VI. BORN OF WATER AND SPIRIT

A. The man on the cross, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Jesus didn’t say, oh, sorry,

you we got a problem, you got to be baptized.”

B. Best thing to do, is to read the next verse; the best Commentary on the Bible is the Bible.

C. Jesus unlocks that mystery, “that which is born of flesh is flesh, that which is born of spirit is

spirit.”

D. Physical birth, #1, Spiritual, #2, you got to be a new creation, spiritual birth.

VII. YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN

A. You MUST be born again – the only time Jesus used the word “MUST” as a command is right

here.

B. Vs. 7, “Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.”

C. Vs. 8, the wind blows… - You can sense the wind, feel the wind, you can see things that are

blown, but you don’t know where it comes from and where it’s going. So everyone that is

born of the Spirit. It’s a mystery. It’s a miracle! You can feel its presence; you can feel its

effects.

D. Vs. 9 “How can these be?” Vs. 10, - Jesus expected Nicodemus to know his Bible. Jesus

expects us to be progressive in our faith. That is why Bible Study is very important.

E. Vs. 14-15, “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so that Son of Man must be

lifted up, that everyone who believers may have eternal life in him.”

F. Vs. 16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever

believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
